Thank you to everyone who participated in the January 27th Town Hall. Your involvement and feedback is greatly appreciated as we work as a collective to grow as a community. Here is a summary of what was discussed and the Kelowna Pride Societies next steps.
The Town Hall focused on addressing membership issues, preparing for the upcoming Annual General Meeting, and discussing the roles and responsibilities of board members within the organization.
Concerns were raised about the direction of the Kelowna Pride Society, the need for a clear mission, vision, and purpose, and the importance of creating safe spaces for the community. The discussion brought up concerns around lack of communication from the KPS, access to information, and the structure, policies and procedures within the board, as well as the challenges faced in managing grants, and the future plans for the organization.
Next Steps For the Kelowna Pride Society:
Collaborate with community members to fix online membership issues to allow members to register or re-register as we approach the AGM
This has been completed with support from members, and the membership registration is running smoothly again
Reschedule the AGM to an earlier date
Develop clear policies and procedure around decision-making and communication with KPS members and the broader community
Revise and implement the board and membership code of conduct in time for the AGM
Create a governance committee to focus on board infrastructure, governance, and training
Those interested can join this committee at the AGM
Develop a recruitment plan to bring in new board members
Create a list of community members willing to provide advice and mentorship
Many past board members and community members have offered to support - either through joining the governance committee or just being a point of contact for advice, questions, and mentorship
Clarify roles and responsibilities for each board position
Improve email communication
Commit to sending out regular newsletters monthly
Establish and implement a standard practice for social media moderation
Organize quarterly community meetings/town halls
Review and revise the application form for board members
This has been transferred to a Google form for organization and ease here
Conduct a skills inventory of current board members and identify gaps and needed skills
Clarify KPS involvement in the Two-Spirit Powwow
Clarified that the Two-Spirit Powwow is not and cannot a KPS hosted event
Ongoing work to rebuild relationships with past board members and volunteers
Set up an external chat and communication channel for current and past board members to share information and access support
Thank you again to our community for your continuous care and involvement in the future of the Kelowna Pride Society!
